Building the Commercial Internet

From a 64 Kbps international connection and four customers to the foundations of a commercial Internet business in South Africa.

Period1993–1996OrganisationTICSA / Internet Africa
Starting point

The early commercial Internet was infrastructure, operations and experimentation.

The original account describes launching with three partners, a single 64 Kbps link to UUNET in the United States and four original customers. The work was hands-on: network equipment, connectivity, customer installation and the practical operation of an emerging service.

Technology choices included Cisco routing, Frame Relay connectivity and early Internet services. The story captures an environment where building the service and figuring out the business happened simultaneously.

What changed

Engineering became the foundation for product and commercial leadership.

As the business grew, the work expanded beyond keeping the network running. The subsequent Internet Africa / UUNET story describes the move into product development, commercial modelling, business development and broader technology leadership.
